Yorkville College Dental Clinic
The Yorkville College's philosophy of care reflects values of academic excellence
in teaching and thinking. This College is dedicated to client oriented care with co-discovery
techniques. The care is based on the client's needs, and expectations. Quality client care
is provided through a team approach that is evidence based, aimed at attaining and preserving
general and oral health.
The new Yorkville College dental clinic is state of the art with completely self contained units.
- There are 20 dental units in the clinic
- There are 3 different x-ray units within the clinic that capable of traditional and digital technology.
Students begin learning clinical skills within their first semester of the program.
The students commence the semester practicing on a mannequin and proceed to working on student partners. After 6
months of practice, they move on to utilizing their skills on clients. The clinic is a learning facility designed
to aid the students in performing dental hygiene treatment on the general public at very reasonable rates. Clients
receive superior treatment within the clinic because the students have their performance assessed and graded by either
a Registered Dental Hygienist or licensed Dentist. The dental care is very thorough and includes intra/extra oral examinations
(cancer checks), decay checks, gum and bone health evaluations, gingivitis and periodontitis treatments, whitening, and other
preventive techniques.
Dental Hygiene Staff
- All of the clinical instructors are Registered Dental Hygienists or Registered Restorative Dental Hygienists in the province of Ontario held in
good standing with the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario
- Within most clinic sessions a licensed dentist is present to prescribe x-ray, diagnose oral diseases,
and administer local anesthetic if needed
- Dental Hygiene Instructor/student ratios within the clinic are kept at a minimum of 1:5
- Many of the Dental Hygiene instructors maintain employment in private practice within a
dental office in order to maintain their skills and keep abreast of the latest procedures
