Yorkville College has designed a new Dental Chairside Assistant - Level II program that meets today’s challenges in the Health Care professions. Job prospects for Dental Chairside Assistants have never been better. The number of dentists is growing and chairside assistants supporting both hygienists and dentists will face a growing employment market an employment market growing faster than average for all health care occupations. In the dental industry, population growth and greater retention of natural teeth are stimulating demand for more dentists and more diverse dental services.

Program Design:

In today’s health care market, the Dental Chairside Assistant will be expected to take on more responsibilities, both clinical and administrative. Within the program at Yorkville College, you will acquire all of the skills and competencies to maximize your potential within the health care industry. You will experience the use of new and leading edge equipment and instrumentation. Our instructors will be approaching the program from an integrated learning system where chairside skills and radiology techniques will become second nature to you. You will learn theory and practice of Intra-oral dental assisting.

The program delivers all the required dental assisting theory and practice. There is a student workbook to enhance learning. There is a complete laboratory service to practice manipulating amalgams and other dental materials. The text has complete chapter outlines, objectives and key terms, colour illustrations, photos, tables and chapter summaries to facilitate student learning. Our graduates will be HARP certified as part of the graduation requirements. Students will learn theory and practice of Intra-oral dental assisting.

Modules:

Foundation of Intra-Oral Dental Assisting

In this course, the student will expand his or her knowledge essential for intra-oral dental chairside assisting. The course will expand the learner's knowledge of the head, neck and dental anatomy for a better understanding of oral pathology, preventive dentistry, orthodontics, periodontology, pharmacology and emergency care.

Intra-Oral Dental Procedures and Clinic

This course builds on the knowledge and skills learned from Dental Chairside Assisting Level I, and provides didactic, laboratory and clinical practice in intra-oral procedures such as the use of mouth mirrors; explorers; intermediate restorations, veneers and whitening systems; matrix systems for restorative dentistry; fixed prosthodontics; provisional coverage; instrument grasps; coronal polishing; anaesthesia and pain control; dental liners, bases and bonding systems, isolation techniques; fluoride treatments; rubber dam application and removal; and oral self-care procedures.

Clinical Placement II

This course provides the learner an opportunity for intra-dental assisting practice in a general dentistry office. It also reinforces the skills acquired and mastered in Clinical Dental Assisting I, focuses on professional conduct and communication skills, clinical support procedures, chairside assisting and lab procedures. The clinical placement will enable the learner to build on skills and knowledge learned before placement and to integrate them into the private practice setting.

Career Success

This course introduces students to career planning skills and the application of these life skills by preparing themselves for employment. Active participation will be required as students will be learning experientially, collaboratively and cooperatively. The focus will be on developing the student's career plans.
