Essential Introduction to Computers
This course will introduce the students to the new generation of Operating Systems - Windows Vista. Students will be engaged in activities and theories which will prepare them for future success in the business world. Students will be encouraged to expand their understanding of the Windows Vista operating system through experimentation, exploration, and planning ahead. KeyboardingLearning features useful for projects, business and personal use. Expanding knowledge through learning skills needed to incorporate the web into the work . Microsoft WordThis course will introduce the students to the new and improved Microsoft Office Suite 2007 – Microsoft Word. Students will be engaged in activities which will allow them to develop various documentations for a variety of situations. The students will be presented with features useful for projects, business and personal use. They will also be encouraged to expand their knowledge through learning skills needed to incorporate the web into their work. Microsoft ExcelThis course will introduce the students to the new and improved Microsoft Office Suite 2007 – Microsoft Excel. Students will be engaged in basic and advanced activities which will allow them to develop various documents such as budgets, marketing and sales reports, forecasts, and statistical tables. The students will be presented with features useful for projects, business and personal use. They will also be encouraged to expand their knowledge through learning skills needed to incorporate the web into their work. Medical FundamentalsThis course will assist the learner in becoming familiar and comfortable using Microsoft Word to process various medical documents. The student will practice writing letters and memos while learning to create accompanying envelopes. Emphasis will be placed on the accuracy, grammar, spelling and maintenance of confidentiality when dealing with patient records. The course will also include an introduction to the medical field and possibly employment prospects upon completion of their diploma program. Anatomy and PhysiologyThis course provides the learner an introduction to human anatomy and physiology as well as dental terminology. Topics covered include human cell structure and function, as well as the different tissues, organs and organ systems of the human body. The interrelationship between the different organ systems of the human body and oral health is also discussed. Nutrition, Pharmacology and PsychologyThis course is designed to expose students to the important facets regarding nutrition, pharmacology and psychology. The student will learn foundational knowledge of nutrition as applied to dentistry, including nutrients for growth and development of oral structures, diet and dental caries, nutrition and periodontal diseases, and diet counseling of the dental client. The course also introduced the student to the nutritional recommendations during periods of special nutrient requirements, nutritional implications of common illnesses and chronic conditions, and nutritional misinformation and food faddism. The learner will also be introduced to the principles of pharmacology as applied to dentistry. An overview of drugs encountered in dentistry will be presented and discussed, including drug dosage and forms, controlled substances, Canadian drug legislations, classification of drugs, premedications and adverse events. Drugs that are prescribed for medical reasons that have dental significance will be discussed as well. Students will learn how to prevent medical emergencies in the dental office while placing emphasis is on prevention, preparation, recognizing an emergency situation, and patient care in emergency situations. Finally, this course has a systemic empirical study if human behaviour. Some major topics discussed include: Research Methodology, Learning, Memory, Motivation, Emotion, Perception, Language Development, Intelligence, Personality Theories, Anxiety and Stress, Abnormal Behaviour and Therapies. Introductory Dental TranscriptionThis course introduces students to Dental transcription and document preparation. Due to the importance of communication skills within the workplace, this course emphasizes the application of language arts skills to produce grammatically correct reports utilized in dental facilities. Grammar instruction is a major component of this course, which emphasizes clear, correct, writing based on the process of composing, revising and editing reports. Report templates will also be introduced to the students. Oral Facial SciencesThis course focuses on anatomy and physiology, and is designed to provide information and practical experience in basic dental sciences. In addition, the learner applies basic science information to the dental administrator role and common procedures in the work setting. Students will learn about the human body it’s functions as well as detailed anatomy of the head, neck and normal development of the oral cavity and facial complex, teeth and attachment unit. Dental Office PracticeThis course introduces the learner to dental business office systems and provides an understanding of the business side of dental practice. It also discusses the organizational and management aspects of records, filing systems, appointment scheduling, recall systems, basic accounting principles, insurance basics, prepaid dental programs, claims processing and patient follow-up. Dental AdministrationThis course exposes the students to dental business office systems and provides an understanding of the business side of dental practice. Students will learn how to efficiently and effectively perform all tasks associated with office bookkeeping and payroll such as: month-end, year-end, source deduction remittances, bank reconciliations and ledger balancing. While the student gains knowledge regarding office manager procedures, the student will also gain exposure to marketing. Some marketing duties will include marketing the dental practice, dental specialties, and special practices. Dental Software ApplicationsThis course introduces students to dental administration software used in offices and facilities. It includes detailed step-by-step instruction on patient registration, booking appointments, patient billing, reconciliation, medical records and prescription preparation. This course also allows the student to become familiar with all the reports required to efficiently manage a dental office using bookkeeping in a computerized system. Practicum Placement – 80 HoursThis course provides the learner an opportunity for dental administrator practice in a general dentistry office. It builds on the skills acquired and mastered in the theoretical components of the dental administrator program. It also focuses on professional conduct and communication skills, office support procedures, financial and patient management procedures. The clinical placement will enable the learner to build on skills and knowledge learned before placement and to integrate them into the private and general practice setting. Student Success and OrientationThis course supports the development of skills need to ensure Student Success. Basic orientation to the campus and student life is the first level, then student planning and study skill building techniques are established. After that emphasis on literal comprehension, including vocabulary development, textbook reading, note taking and critical comprehension concludes the course. Career SuccessThis course introduces students to career planning skills and the application of these life skills by preparing themselves for employment. Active participation will be required as students will be learning experientially, collaboratively and cooperatively. The focus will be on developing the student's career plans. Project Management FundamentalsThis course will assist the learner to understand the processes, tools, techniques, and areas of knowledge needed to successfully complete projects. The knowledge to be gained from this course will give the learner a good idea of how his or her work fits into the big picture so that he or she can be a more valuable project team member.
